My idea for Mom Bod was born at my mom’s kitchen counter around Christmas time. I was telling her how bad I feel when I’m online these days, but that it feels like I have to sustain a business presence through social media in order to remain relevant. She wondered, what about a physical newsletter? Something beautiful that feels really good to hold in your hands. I told her I liked the idea and it simmered in my subconscious until I cut the cord from Instagram. I signed off because it started to feel like a toxic part of my life, and the next day, the idea for Mom Bod flooded in.
My vision is to create an offline platform for women who are in it. In the weeds. In the ache. In the strange beauty of raising humans and forgetting, then slowly remembering, who we are. I want to create a space for the feminine experience - shared with depth and kindness. I want to create a container where stories from women of all identities and backgrounds are held with care. Where privilege and oppression can be named and explored without shame. Where the sacredness of the body and the loneliness of the soul are given equal air time. In my wildest dreams Mom Bod becomes more than a magazine…but let’s start here.
Every issue will feature reflections and questions from you, our dear audience, on the thoughts and curiosities that our ideas provoke in you. I’ll provide prompts for the next issue - and you’ll be able to write me via snail mail (or email) to be featured in the next issue. Each season you’ll be prompted to offer your wisdom, resources, art, and stories to submit to the next publication. For example, you’ll be welcome to submit :
the adorable things your kiddos say
seasonal traditions that anchor your family
parenting tips
favorite beauty products
body image hacks
poems/paintings/essays/whatever creative impulse you’d like to share with the MOMBOD community!
I’ll also be hosting an advice column where you can ask me your questions about womanhood, motherhood, partnership, body image - whatever is not working in your life, and I’ll do my best to bring you the medicine of my words.
The ‘we’ behind Mom Bod is a collaboration of some of my favorite people. I’m the writer. Kristin Violet is our graphic designer. Natalie Patton Becker is our copy editor. Ben Wade is our portrait photographer and editor. The first two women are childhood friends from Minnesota. The third is, of course, my brilliant husband! I’m thrilled to be working on an art project with my friends and family, it has felt truly fun at every turn. Evidence that I’m on the right path!!
